[UPDATE] The Federal “FDA” HAS RECALLED THE ZIMMER-BIOMET COMPREHENSIVE TYPE REVERSE SHOULDER IMPLANT

The FDA has announced a Class I Recall of Zimmer-Biomet Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder Implant because of a reportedly High Fracture Rate

Feb. 15, 2017 — The Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a Class I Recall of the Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder Humeral Tray (Model 115340) due to a higher rate of fracturing of the devices are fracturing than was statin the safety labeling required with the product.

If a bio-medical implant fractures, the victim patients may well need more surgery to replace or remove it. This revision or repair surgery puts all patients at noticeably increased risk of developing:

• An infection
• permanent shoulder function loss
• or even death

Zimmer-Biomet initiated this recall of its Bio-Medical Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder Implant beginning on Dec. 20, 2016. On that date, the company sent an official “Urgent Medical Device Recall Notice” to all affected surgeons, providers and customers (health care facilities, etc.). This official manufacturer recall notice advised that those customers not use any of the recalled devices and said the company’s sales representatives would come to the facilities and retrieve them

Zimmer-Biomet said that all doctors should carefully monitor their patients who’ve been implanted with this particular recalled device as they usually would and did not actually provide any additional monitoring instructions for these patients.

Approximately 3,662 implants were affected by and thus covered by the recall.

Bio-Medical device manufacturer Biomet Inc. (now known as Zimmer-Biomet) stated that its new “Comprehensive Reverse Shoulder System” would be one of the “next generation reverse shoulder prosthesis.”

This specific device was approved by the FDA for use starting in 2007.

Just a few years after the FDA approved the device, Biomet issued recalls covering some components which made up part of its shoulder implant system. The company cited complaints from doctors and patients about the device suffering fractures.

A “reverse shoulder replacement” gets performed on patients who either have a completely torn rotator cuffs or a normal replacement surgery which failed previously. “Reverse” implants use different patient muscles to initiate and maintain arm movement than regular implants. In some patients it can restore some range of motion to those who have lost all mobility of their shoulders because of severe pain.
