What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury, generally traumatic, which occurs when a person’s brain hits the inside of their skull because of a head blow or a head movement in a violent manner. Such an impact can trigger a procession of literally microscopic changes in someone’s brain and can produce varying kinds of symptoms. These can include nausea, heightened emotions, amnesia, confusion, or even just dizziness or headaches. A real concussion doesn’t result in lost consciousness every time.

After suffering a concussion, a person’s brain is very vulnerable for a varying time period. Suffering more than one concussion majorly brings up the actual risk of brain damage in the long-term. This is especially true if later concussions happen before any prior concussion has been rehabilitated properly. Many repeated injuries by subconcussion (a hit less than the literal force needed to cause an official concussion) can pose the same risk.

The following are some immediate symptoms of concussions:

  • Slurred/incoherent speech
  • Vacant stare
  • Strong expressed emotional reactions (i.e. excitement, sadness, anger, etc.)
  • Metallic or “tinny” taste in the mouth
  • Amnesia
  • Lack of balance
  • Incoordination
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Headaches
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Dizziness
  • Inability to maintain focus, confusion, disorientation
  • Unconsciousness

If you have any of these symptoms, call a Sports Concussion Lawyer in San Antonio at Carabin Shaw today. We are here to help.
