What are the Problems With Portable Gasoline Storage Containers?Portable gasoline containers are almost everywhere. Sadly, too many of these colored plastic containers are designed and built with serious defects in that design or manufacturing. These design and manufacturing defects can cause the user to suffer devastating injuries, burns, or even cause a death. Such terrible injuries and accidents can be avoided easily. All it would take is a slight change in the manufacture and design of the gas can. There also need to be proper and appropriate warnings telling people who use these products of the possibilities for injury and general danger.
The Problems That are Associated With Potentially Defective Gasoline Storage ContainersThe problems associated with gasoline storage containers include:
The lack of an effective flame arrestor within the pour spout of the gasoline can. This basic, simple design and manufacturing modification, which does not typically cost more than 50 cents to add to the container, simply consists of a metal device with which there are holes which fit into the area of the spout of a gasoline can. This arrestor device operates by forcing any accidental flames to move through a narrow channel which will not let the flames pass through to the main storage area of the container. This keeps the rest of the gas within the can from lighting off, lighting up and exploding
The usually lacking or inadequate warnings on the containers themselves are the first problem. A bold, prominent, visible risk warning wouldn’t cost more than a few cents more than the warnings currently used on some cases containers now. These increased warnings could prevent many tragic injuries caused by accidents.
The almost total lack of any child-resistant caps on gas storage containers is the next problem. Despite the cost to change the original cap in favor of a child-resistant cap generally being less than a few pennies, most manufacturers still refuse to take the legally mandated actions to protect those who purchase their gasoline storage products.
Frequently, what most parents and especially almost all children do not really understand is that gasoline vapors can easily ignite. Any nearby open type flame, any gas pilot light from a gas line in the home or office, and even sometimes static electricity, sadly, can cause gasoline vapor to catch fire and cause the gasoline storage container to explode. This can lead to a horrible outcome.
