Used as a car seat, the product is safely functional. When used as a carrier, however, the product turns dangerous. Used as a carrier, the Embrace’s handle can unexpectedly release, causing the carrier to rotate forward – making it possible for infants to potentially fall out of the carrier. Tragically, the Evenflo Embrace Infant Car Seat/Carrier has caused serious injury to hundreds of infants due to this defect in design.

Evenflo announced the recall after receiving 679 reports of the faulty handle. In the release, Evenflo states that the product is still safe to use as a car seat. Evenflo is sending a repair kit to all registered users of the product. This repair kit will strengthen the handle and prevent future incidents. However, if you did not register your product after purchase, you are not included on this list to receive a repair kit – and you could potentially be using a dangerous carrier.

The Evenflo recall affects approximately 450,000 units, all manufactured before April 8, 2006. The affected car seat/carriers have model numbers beginning with 317, 320, 397, 398, 540, 548, 549, 550, 556, 597, 598 or 599.
