Vehicles Which Have Been Recalled for Defective Takata Airbags
Either the NHTSA, or the manufacturer, have recalled the following autos and light trucks because they contain Takata manufactured air bags which are potentially defective. The emphasis in this recall is on autos and light trucks bought, leased or used regularly states with persistently high-humidity. On Dec. 3, 2014, Takata officially declined to increase the recall. This was despite many requests from officials at NHTSA. Three manufacturers did however agree to a voluntary expanded recall of their Takata-products:
- Ford territorially expanded recalled vehicles to those affected in every state.
- Honda also expanded its recall to the vehicles affected in every state.
- Chrysler expanded its recall to more of the 2003 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickup trucks which were ever registered or sold in “Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas and the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands."
On the 19th of March, 2015, Honda expanded the recall inclusively to any of the following vehicles. Some of these vehicles might contain Takata airbags, all of which have potential defects:
- 2008 Pilot SUV
- 2004 Civic
- 2001 Accord sedans
This expanded recall adds all of the 2008 Honda Pilot and raises the total affected vehicles to 104,871.
On the 16th of April, 2015, Nissan also expanded the recall of Sentra models inclusively to more than 45,000 cars of the model years 2004 to 2006. This only included those located within certain geographic areas which have routinely high humidity. Most of these regions are on the Gulf Coast of the U.S.. Nissan expanded the recall after hearing about Louisiana woman who was injured when flying shrapnel from a Takata airbag, which was in a to that point unrecalled 2006 Nissan Sentra injured her.
Five automakers issued another airbag recall on the 28th of May 28, 2015, which included both the driver side and passenger Takata manufactured airbags. This expanded recall added an additional 3.6 million vehicles to the current recall list. These additional vehicles increase the total number of recalled vehicles from each manufacturer by the following:
- BMW AG: 280,000
- Fiat Chrysler: about 2 million
- Ford: 967,000
- Honda: 350,000
- Mitsubishi: just under 83,000
The remaining manufacturers whose vehicles are included within the recall - GM, Daimler Trucks, Mazda, Subaru and Toyota - are expected to release information about their expanded lists at a later date, with Nissan adding that its position includes no plan to recall any additional autos or truck in the U.S.
