Church Bus Accident in Hill CountryAccording to sources, the Federal National Transportation Safety Board officials Thursday will start the process of figuring out what caused a tragic accident that claimed the lives of 13 senior citizens after their church’s minibus collided with a white pickup truck recently in the Hill Country outside San Antonio.
Two people became injured in Wednesday's horrific accident. The injured included the person operating the large pickup truck that was in the collision with the bus, according to a statement from the Texas DPS.
"It was a really gruesome scene," one motorist who drove up to the crash site, told the media.
The DPS briefed reporters that 12 people, including the operator of the bus, died on the accident scene. The final fatality apparently died at a local hospital. One passenger riding in the church vehicle survived but is in “critical” condition, according to the Texas DPS.
The mini-bus passengers were congregants of the “First Baptist Church” in New Braunfels, Texas. The passengers were returning from a church retreat, according to the church’s Facebook page.
The DPS further announced that the bus was traveling southbound when the pickup truck veered from the northbound lane into the bus’s lane and struck the mini-bus. The accident occurred on a curved portion of the road, but the accident’s cause is still under close investigation, a preliminary DPS report said. Carabin Shaw’s Hill Country Bus Accident legal team is also investigating whether the bus, the seatbelts, if any, the windshield of the bus, the tires or any part of the pickup truck were designed or manufactured defectively. We intend to find out if the survivor(s) and families have a cause of action against anyone for their pain and suffering and the costs associated with this tragedy.
The bus was travelling from the “Alto Frio Baptist Encampment” in Leakey, Texas when the crash happened near Garner State Park, on a section of Highway 83 with only two-lanes.
In issuing a statement, the Alto Rio Baptist authorities said that with “heavy hearts” their “thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families” in their grief after the horrible accident which happened Wednesday afternoon.
The New Braunfels church canceled all scheduled events, but members were seen gathered inside the church Wednesday night.
In a post on its Facebook page, the church asked for prayers for the victims and their families.
"We are ministering to family members to help them deal with this tragedy. Counselors will be on hand at the church tomorrow," the church wrote on Facebook. "If you're a Christian, you can pray for those who lost their loved ones and for the church family."
Gov. Greg Abbott issued a statement sending his condolences to all the victims' and their families.
"We are saddened by the loss of life and our hearts go out to all those affected," the statement quoted the Governor as saying.
