Takata Ordered Stop Using, Over Time, Ammonium Nitrate PropellantOn or about Nov. 3, 2015 Takata was fined about $70 million. There was also an additional possible $130 million penalty to be assessed if Takata failed to obey the orders issued by NHTSA. These orders included appointing an independent monitor for safety. On or about Jan. 13, 2017, the Department of Justice released the information that Takata’s lawyers had agreed that it would plead guilty to one felony count of wire fraud and pay the government $1 billion in total criminal penalties. The Federal Judge presiding as appointed retired FBI Director Robert Mueller to administer and oversee a Takata Victim Compensation Fund as one provision of Takata’s settlement with U.S. DOJ.
