Was your home or business, here in San Antonio, or in the surrounding areas, damaged in one of the recent hail storms? Call Carabin Shaw for help.
After you have taken care of documenting your damages and contacts with your insurance company, the claims process can begin. Next there are things to do after the claims process starts:
- Temporary Repairs
You need to make sure to do any needed repairs to your business or your home so that the property damage gets no worse. Put up tarps on roofs. Put boards across and on your windows. Make sure to remove any broken tree limbs. Use your common sense to secure the property damages by a San Anontio hail storm. Take pictures before you repair the damages and after. - Make A Written List Of Your Itemized Damages
This list will be of great help in get you organized. It will also help keep up with what you or your business lost in the recent hail storms. - Get Your Insurance Policy
Get all insurance policies that might cover your home or business. You need them in writing to process your claim. If you can't find your insurance policy, call your insurance agent. They will copy it and send you the copy, free of any charge. - Inspections and Inspectors
Make sure to only permit your contractor and/or insurance adjuster get up on your roof. Each and every time someone walks up on your roof, the more damage that may occur and be difficult to tell from original hail storm damage. Be sure that this does not happen. - Always get a Second Opinion
After your assigned insurance adjuster consults with his employer and then gives you their profit driven estimate of damages owed, if any, get a second, unbiased opinion from a licensed contractor. The insurance company may try to save themselves money by underpaying you for your damages. Get an unbiased, independent repair estimate. This needs to be in a form understood and accepted by your insurance company, so that repairs to your property will be authorized and paid for. If you need help finding a licensed, qualified inspector, give us a call. This is one of the things we can help with. - The Claim Process
Since these San Antonio storms were near disasters. Your insurer should have 30 days within which to reject or accept your claim. Within this legally mandated period, your insurance carrier can, and may, ask for additional time to respond. If they do, they will send to you a written notice detailing why it wants and needs the extension of time to respond. After your claim is accepted, the insurance carrier must pay your damages to you in no more than 5 days. In order to make sure all of this happens, you need to quickly respond to requests for additional information sent to you from your carrier. Any problems with this will delay your carrier's statutory, legal requirement to pay you in a timely manner. Your company’s claim adjuster will deal directly with you and understand that these insurance adjusters are skilled, highly trained negotiators. That all important "Second Opinion" you got about your damages will give you or your representative solid grounds to argue in favor of your position regarding damages owed.
