Surprisingly, an “ordinary” product, talcum powder, when used for cleaning, has shown a link to ovarian cancer in women who make use of it to promote feminine hygiene.
If used as directed on the perineal region one time a week, a woman may face a 33% increase in her risk of developing ovarian cancer. When used daily, her risk may increase up to 41%. This is according to a 2008 research project by Dr. Margaret Gates, a Harvard epidemiologist. Her research was peer reviewed before being released.
Johnson & Johnson, is a primary producer of talc-based washes and body cleanliness powder in the United States.
Johnson and Johnson has never issued any warning to women of the increased cancer risk associated with talcum powder. Dr. Daniel Cramer, an additional Harvard based researcher, asserts that thousands of women a year have ovarian cancer develop, largely caused by using talc for cleaning purposes.
Ovarian cancer is a serious condition that may well cause more than 13,000 American deaths in the year 2014 alone.
Understanding Talcum Powder’s Link with cancerThere have been suspicions for many years among the Medical Community that cleaning the female genital area with talc powder increases women's risk of getting ovarian cancer. Research published in the last decade has solidified these beliefs and suspicions.
The research shows that when talc particles enter a woman’s reproductive system, they can move into the ovarian area. Talc particles break down slowly. They can remain in the ovarian area for years. Once in the ovaries, the talc particles act like “foreign” matter. This “foreign” matter creates inflammation. This inflammatory response creates conditions which increase her possibilities and likelihood of cancer development. This cancer grows in the ovaries.
Lawsuits Related to Talcum Powder and CancerEvidence of the talc powder cancer link has gained acceptance in the mainstream medical community recently. Since this, women have learned, and continue to learn, that their cancer diagnosis may have linkage to their use of talc powder. These women were never given any warning about the danger. These women are upset about this lack of any warning.
Johnson & Johnson now faces lawsuits in many states because of its failure to warn women of the risk that their use of talcum powder could cause them to h ave an increase in their risk of getting cancer.
The first lawsuit related to talcum powder and ovarian cancer, which resulted in compensation for the victims, happened in The United States District Court in North Dakota in 2013. An attorney representing Johnson and &Johnson admitted that Johnson and Johnson executives were aware of the link between baby powder and ovarian cancer link and had been for years. Despite this, the executives but did not think that the risk was significant enough to require them to issue a warning to women who bought their product.
In the meantime, Johnson and Johnson sold talc products across the country. In fact, it dominates the market for these products. Women who been stuck down by ovarian cancer have the right to file a lawsuit against J & J to seek compensation. So do their families.
Women who got ovarian cancer after regularly using talc based products, and their family members, should be entitled to compensation through a lawsuit.
