Most abuse, injuries, or neglect in nursing homes or other elder care situation can be traced to issues with the staff:
Sometimes nursing homes are understaffed, which can lead to an atmosphere of abuse and neglect.
Sometimes inexperienced or untrained staff can become frustrated with residents.
Nursing homes sometimes hire unqualified staff, such as those who have criminal records.
There are many different types of neglect or abuse that may happen in nursing homes or other elder care facilities and situations. Symptoms of abuse or neglect may include:
- Your loved one being afraid, especially of certain staff members
- Your loved one being unwilling to discuss your concerns
- Unexplained charges on credit cards
- Unexplained withdrawals from checking and savings accounts
- Unexplained bruises or injuries
- Emergency room admissions
- Personal items vanishing from your loved one's room
In Texas, families have the right to install video cameras in their loved one's room, as long as they notify the nursing home. After that, the camera can capture evidence of abuse and also serve as an excellent deterrent.
