(November 3, 2022) Yesterday, November 2, 2022, a construction worker in the Northside of San Antonio was rushed to the hospital after an accident, as reported by KSAT 12. The worker was laying down pipes when he fell twenty feet into a hole, where he remained trapped until firefighters rescued him. Fortunately, the hole was not at risk of collapsing, and he received no life-threatening injuries as a result of the fall. With construction across San Antonio comes risks for the construction workers and drivers using the under-construction freeways. Unfortunately, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reports that 40,000 injuries a year and three fatalities a day are the results of vehicle traffic and poor operation on construction sites. Evidently, a driver was heading northbound on I-35, approaching Shanklin Road, when they approached a construction zone. At this portion of I-35, the highway was restricted to one lane, resulting in a significant traffic back-up. The driver failed to notice that traffic was stopped due to the construction and crashed full-speed into the rear-most vehicle.
Last month, an accident involving a construction crane and a pick-up truck claimed the lives of two men. The accident occurred in Jefferson County on Interstate 10, near Beaumont. As is often the case in fatal Texas car accidents, news reports conveyed conflicting information in the immediate aftermath of the collision.
What is known is that two men were traveling westbound on I-10. As they approached a section of I-10 where crews were working on widening the highway, they collided with a crane. Both men were immediately killed in the collision.
Initially, reports indicated that a large commercial vehicle was towing the construction crane, which somehow became dislodged from the truck. As the crane broke free, it collided with the pick-up truck.
