Labor Day Drunk Drivers in San Antonio: What You Need to Know

Labor Day Weekend (unofficially) marks the end of summer for many. Unfortunately, it’s also a time of deadly accidents involving drunk drivers.

Celebrations naturally involve alcohol consumption, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, many people in San Antonio make the immensely irresponsible decision to drive drunk during these times, and innocent people pay the price.

Far more people are expected to travel by vehicle and stay local this Labor Day Weekend, meaning that the roads will be congested, and the possibility of encountering a drunk driver will be higher than usual.

Impaired Driving Estimates for Labor Day 2024

Alcohol-impaired driving caused 36% of all traffic fatalities nationwide in 2022. Over Labor Day Weekend, 39% of fatalities involved at least one alcohol-impaired driver.

Based on estimates from previous years and increasing motor-vehicle travel trends, the NCS also estimates that there will be roughly 51,900 serious injuries from auto accidents nationwide during Labor Day Weekend. Additionally, an estimated 457 people are expected to die in auto accidents nationwide during this period.

You are 61% more likely to encounter a drunk driver during Labor Day Weekend than on an average day.

What to Do If You Encounter a Drunk Driver

As a part of Saturation Saturday, San Antonio will have a greater police presence on the roads to deter drunk driving. However, if you encounter a driver you suspect is drunk, follow these steps:

  1. Stay Away — If they’re in front of you, slow down. If they’re behind you, try to pull over if it’s safe to do so and let them pass. Do not attempt to stop them, get their attention, or engage with them.
  2. Gather Details — Only if you can safely do so, make a note of their plate number, color, and vehicle type.
  3. Call 9-1-1 — If you have hands-free calling, you can do this while driving. If you don’t,  pull over to a safe location before making the call.

Leave the rest up to law enforcement.
