What to Do After a Rollover Accident in San Antonio
If there’s one thing you don’t want to happen in an auto accident, it’s a rollover.
A rollover occurs when a vehicle tips over on its side or its roof. There are many reasons why this happens, but common contributing factors include speeding, distracted driving, side-impact collisions, and road debris. If you find yourself in a rollover accident, it’s critical that you know what to do to protect your claim and your life.
Steps to Take After a Rollover Accident
Rollover accidents often end in severe injury. It’s imperative that you prepare beforehand by learning these steps:
- Assess Yourself and Passengers for Injuries — Keep movement to a minimum if you injured your back, head, or neck. Use first aid to stop bleeding while you wait for emergency assistance. Don’t move anyone who is too injured to move unless their life is in immediate danger, as this could worsen their injuries.
- Exit the Vehicle — If you and your passengers are not too injured, exit the vehicle and move at least 100 feet away. Flipped-over vehicles are more prone to fires and/or explosions. Make sure you stay near the scene and are visible to emergency personnel.
- Call 9-1-1 — Immediately seek medical attention for your injuries. Responding officers will make an accident report as well, which is often required for insurance claims.
- Exchange Information — This will likely be facilitated by the responding officer.
- Record the Scene — Critical evidence includes photos and/or videos of the scene, damage to the vehicles, and any visible injuries. If you are unable to gather evidence, ask someone to do it for you if anyone is available. Police will also document the scene.
- Contact Your Insurance — Reporting the accident as soon as you can is important to protect your claim. Remember not to admit fault or say that you are OK to the insurance company.
