Woman Killed After Falling from Her Bike in Early-Morning Accident

According to a KSAT News report, a senior woman was killed while riding her bike on the South Side this morning.

Police reported the accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. on August 12th, at the intersection of Southton Road and the SE Loop 410 access road. A 63-year-old woman was riding on Southton approaching the intersection when she fell off her bike for unknown reasons and remained on the ground. A Ford Ranger traveling eastbound on the access road hit the woman while she was still on the ground. He stayed at the scene and helped the woman, who was pronounced dead. A man who was reportedly riding with the woman noticed that she was no longer behind him and returned to the scene to find her on the ground. The investigation is ongoing.

Top 3 Bike Safety Tips for Seniors in San Antonio

Biking is an increasingly popular activity in San Antonio, especially for older adults, and it’s easy to see why.

There are countless benefits to bike riding, more senior-friendly bikes than ever, and gorgeous trails that make the activity a huge hit for the whole family — but there are risks to seniors as well.

With bike injuries on the rise, let’s review the top 3 safety tips for experienced riders and those seniors looking to revisit bike riding.

Safety Tip #1 — Don’t Go Alone

One of the most important steps you can take is to take someone with you.

Having a riding partner is critical if anything goes wrong. Consider riding in a group or taking a family member with you. This not only reduces your risk of getting lost or stranded but also is a great way to stay social and meet new people.

Safety Tip #2 — Use a Bike Trail

You can ride your bike almost anywhere you drive, but it’s not recommended.

San Antonio does not have many bike lanes, and pedestrian accidents are common. You are also sharing the road with higher numbers of large trucks and SUVs that can do some serious damage and have a hard time seeing you.

Fortunately, San Antonio has many paved bike trails that are completely separated from traffic for a safer ride. Check out this website for a comprehensive list.

Safety Tip #3 — Invest in Safety Gear

As we age, it’s easier to get hurt.

Wearing the right gear can prevent serious injuries. The basics include things like:

  • A Helmet
  • Knee Pads,
  • Reflective Gear,
  • Eye Protection,
  • Elbow Pads,
  • And Sturdy Shoes.

Wear light, breathable clothing when cycling, even in fair weather. It is far easier to suffer a heatstroke injury the older we get. No matter how enjoyable, cycling is still exercise and can quickly heat your body.
