Safe Crossing/Walking Habits for San Antonio Pedestrians: A Review

Walking is a healthy, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to travel short distances.

Pedestrians have the right of way in most situations, and drivers have a responsibility to keep pedestrians safe. However, you also have a responsibility as a pedestrian to share the road responsibly and follow all of the rules of the road while walking.

As the back-to-school season is around the corner and the weather is about to cool, it’s important to review safe walking habits, as well as what to do if you witness a pedestrian accident.

Tips for Safe Walking in San Antonio

Don’t put your safety in the hands of a stranger. Learn these safe walking habits to keep you safe on any street in San Antonio.

  • Obey traffic signals,
  • Cross at crosswalks when possible,
  • When no crosswalk is available, find a well-lit area and avoid stepping out between parked cars,
  • Watch for cars entering and backing out of driveways,
  • Wear high-visibility clothing,
  • Put phones and other distractions away,
  • Do not wear earbuds while walking,
  • Don’t walk drunk,
  • Don’t walk on the highway unless absolutely necessary,
  • When no sidewalk is available, walk against traffic and as far right as possible.

These tips are based on data from the National Safety Council about the causes of most pedestrian accidents.

What to Do If You Witness a Pedestrian Accident in San Antonio

If you witness a pedestrian accident while walking, remember to STOP, CALL, STAY.

  1. STOP — Don’t walk away. Stop or warn oncoming traffic if you can do so safely.
  2. CALL — In Texas, the driver is legally required to call 9-1-1 if they hit a pedestrian. However, if the driver flees the scene or otherwise does not call the police, immediately call 9-1-1 and request EMS.
  3. STAY — Remain at the scene until an officer says it’s okay to leave.

It’s not a good idea to try to move the pedestrian, as this may worsen their injuries. Instead, focus on reassuring them that help is on the way and have the driver block traffic with their vehicle if possible.
