(November 2, 2022) Driving on Holiday nights is always risky when it comes to intoxicated drivers on the road, but this is especially true for Halloween night. Getting seriously hurt or losing a loved one is not the spooky most people expect on this festive occasion. Unfortunately, recent statistics found that drunk drivers were involved in 44% of fatal crashes on Halloween weekend. When not fatal, accidents involving drunk drivers almost always involve severe injuries like Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Spinal Cord Injury (SCI), which can change the victim’s life forever. Fatal pedestrian accidents are also up on Halloween, and 23% of these accidents involved a driver or motorcyclist with a BAC of 0.08% or higher.

Spinal Cord Injury and Drunk Driving

Auto accidents are the leading cause of Spinal Cord Injury in the United States for those ages 16-30 and affect a staggering 450,000 people annually. They account for slightly less than half of all new cases of Spinal Cord Injury in the United States every year. Even more tragic is the fact that alcohol is involved 25% of the time. Additionally, half of these spinal cord injuries are complete, meaning that the victim permanently loses all feeling in the lower part of their body. Spinal cord injuries alter a person’s life forever – and the leading cause of this tragedy is an entirely preventable one. That’s scary.

Place your hands on the wheel where the officer can see them

(September 28, 2022) The state of Texas has seen a significant surge of California residents moving in since 2020. In fact, a San Antonio Express-News report found that 92,560 California residents have forfeited their driver’s licenses after moving to Texas from 2020 to January 2022. In a recent viral Tik Tok video, a California comedian who had moved to Austin detailed his experiences in Texas traffic stops. According to the comedian, avoiding a traffic ticket from a Texan police officer is easy if you passionately share your personal reasons for “fleeing” California with the officer. While funny, this is not good advice for interacting with police officers during a traffic stop. In this article, we’ll go over the steps to take if you have been pulled over by a police officer so that the interaction is safe and non-confrontational for yourself and the officer.

Withheld Wages Affect Thousands of Employees in Texas

(September 20, 2022) In 2020 and 2021, the U.S Department of Labor made updates to the Wages and Fair Labor Standards Act of 2009, which prevented managers and company owners from receiving employee tips. This seemingly minor change had a big impact on family-owned small businesses in Texas this year. In April of this year, a Dallas-based and operated barbeque chain was ordered to return nearly 900,000 USD to employees in tips that had been illegally distributed to managers via the company’s tip pooling practices. Then yesterday, on September 19, 2022, the Department of Labor recovered nearly 230,000 USD of withheld wages from Black’s BBQ for the exact same reason. Both restaurants claim to have not known about the change in the law and immediately complied with the order. Small businesses can sometimes misunderstand the law, so it’s important that you know the law if you receive tips.

Serious injuries can leave you unable to work

(August 30, 2022) The owners of a beloved San Antonio Coffee Shop on the South Side are asking for help after an auto accident left the couple hospitalized and the husband unable to work, according to Kens 5 News. Emilie Herrera posted to Instagram that the couple needed help paying for expenses after the accident since her husband, Tatu Herrera, may not be able to return to work for a month or more. He runs the day-to-day operations of The Folklore Coffee Shop, and his absence could mean trouble for the recently reopened business that had been temporarily closed due to the pandemic lockdowns in 2020. Most people know that they may be able to receive legal compensation for physical injuries and car damages after an accident. However, you may not be aware that in Texas, if your injuries have kept you from returning to your workplace, you may be entitled to compensation for lost wages.
