Tips for Holiday Travel on a Motorcycle in Texas
Traveling by motorcycle for the holidays?
Long-distance motorcycle trips can be a lot of fun, especially if you’re traveling for the holidays. Winter motorcycle travel is especially popular in the Texas hill country, where the weather is mild. However, while winter travel can be exciting, it can also be incredibly dangerous when riding your motorcycle through Texas.
Let’s take a look at tips for long-distance motorcycle trips so that you make it to your destination safely.
#1: Choose an Experience-Appropriate Route
Make sure your route fits your experience level. Just starting out? Choose routes with frequent stops to break up your trip and make it more manageable. Plan ahead where you’re going to rest and what you want to see on the way before hitting the road.
#2: Equipment/Safety
Make sure to pack appropriate gear, such as a tire repair kit and a small tool kit. Bring a visor cleaner to ensure a clear view at all times. If you’re using GPS on your phone, get a mount to ensure you’re not picking up and using your phone while riding.
For winter travel, always wear a helmet, warm riding gloves, and warm clothes. A light rain jacket is also a good idea. Before you leave, get your bike checked to make sure your brakes, oil, and engine are in good condition.
#3: Pack Wisely
When you pack, only pack what you really need and keep it stowed close to the center of gravity on your bike. Try to balance the weight on both sides as much as possible and avoid overfilling the back box, which can cause imbalance and make it easier to lose control.
#4: Safe Riding
Always follow all of the rules of the road, such as:
- Observe the Posted Speed Limit
- Never Ride Drunk
- Don’t Lane-split
- Don’t Tailgait
- Signal Before Changing Lanes
There are extra things you can do to protect yourself from careless motorists as well, like:
- Wear bright, visible clothing,
- Use your lights even during the day,
- Make eye contact with drivers before turning,
- Don’t linger in blind spots,
- And never assume drivers will yield the right of way (even if you have it!).
#5: Know What to Do If You’re in an Accident
If you get into an accident while on your trip, know what to do at the scene to protect your claim:
- Stay Calm,
- Call 9-1-1 (legally required if you or anyone else is injured or if property damage exceeds $3,000)
- Move to a safe location if possible
- Seek medical attention if anyone is injured
- Document the scene
- Exchange contact and insurance information
- Report the accident to your insurance
It’s a good idea to get checked out by a doctor, even if you don’t think you’re badly injured. Some life-threatening head injuries don’t immediately show themselves but require swift treatment.
