Fiesta celebrations shouldn’t end in tragedy.

Drunk Driving Arrests Up Again During Fiesta

On April 23, 2023, at 4:15 a.m., a 23-year-old woman was pulled from her vehicle deceased after a single-vehicle accident where witnesses say she drove from the access road to I-10 West, hitting the barrier and landing on her roof, according to a KSAT News report. The police did not indicate that this was the result of drunk driving – however, the citizens of San Antonio are well aware that drunk driving incidents frequently end in tragedy like this for the perpetrator or their victims.

Did You Know?

Drunk driving accidents increase by at least 20% every year in San Antonio during the Fiesta celebration.

Drunk Driving at Fiesta

Fiesta is a wonderful tradition for San Antonio, attracting 2.5 million people this year to celebrate the city’s rich culture. However, Fiesta has also been a time where tragedy strikes as alcohol-impaired drivers hit the streets after their celebrations. Alcohol consumption combined with rough weather makes a poor combination when it comes to driving conditions.

Police reports obtained by San Antonio Express-News found that 146 arrests were made on charges of driving while intoxicated between April 20 and April 30 of this year, with 20 arrests made in one night on April 28, 2023. This is up from 2022, where police only made 129 arrests, but still lower than 2021, which clocked 169 arrests.

Drunk Driving Will Cost You

The TxDOT’s “Drive Sober. No Regrets.” campaign calculated the cost of drunk driving in Texas. A DWI arrest can result in a total of up to $17,000 in legal fees, fines, insurance, bail, and much more. However, this cost is only if you are arrested for a DWI – if you crash your vehicle or injure or kill another person, the consequences are far more severe. Some of the most common injuries after an auto accident involving a drunk driver include:

  • Broken Bones
  • Spinal Cord and Neck Injuries
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBIs)
  • Mild to Severe Burns
  • Internal Bleeding
  • Cuts and Scrapes

Many of these injuries take a very long time to heal, and sometimes, the victims never fully recover from injuries sustained in an accident with an intoxicated driver. All of these consequences – all of the suffering, the pain, and financial loss – are entirely avoidable. You never have to drive drunk.

Don’t drive drunk. If you know you are going to be drinking, get a ride. It is never worth it to drive drunk in Texas.
