An additional spray sunscreen has been recalled following just three months after widely purchased Neutrogena and Aveeno sunscreens were pulled from the shelves. Five products from Coppertone were affected by this recall, all being spray-on SPF’s.
Voluntarily, Coppertone decided to recall twelve different batches of product this week, and among these 12, 5 of them were spray-on sunscreen. Retailers throughout the United States received the products between January 1 and June 15, 2021. (2021) Sarah Jacoby at MSN News States, “Here are the specific sunscreens and lot numbers included in the recall:
Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50 Spray (lots TN00854, TN00855, TN00857, TN00CJV)
Travel-Size Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 50 Spray (lot TN00BU3)
Coppertone Sport Mineral SPF 50 Spray (lots TN008KU, TN008KV)
Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50 Spray (lots TN0083J, TN0083K, TN009GH)
Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 Spray (lots TN00BR2, TN00CJ4)”
Benzene, a known human carcinogen, was present in these specific sunscreen products, leading Coppertone to conduct this recall. In a press release on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, the company inferred that benzene levels in their products would not be enough to cause any negative health effects, based on generally accepted exposure levels by numerous regulatory agencies.
We commonly come into contact with benzene in small quantities in the air due to automobile exhaust and tobacco smoke, as well as glues, paints, and detergents, as the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) infers. Dizziness, confusion, headaches, drowsiness, and change in heart rate are some of the short-term symptoms that can occur due to exposure to large amounts of benzene, according to the CDC. In addition, the CDC has also reported that long-term exposure to benzene causes bone marrow problems, hormonal irregularities, and cancer.
Valisure, an online pharmacy company, reported in May that benzene was detected in 78 batches of sunscreen, including some from well-known brands. As of now, Coppertone, Neutrogena, and Aveeno have all recalled their spray sunscreen after internal testing showed they contained benzene.
(2021) Sarah Jacoby at MSN News States, “If you’re not sure whether or not your Coppertone sunscreen is subject to the recall, you can check it at the company’s site or the FDA press release. The company urges consumers not to use the recalled products and to use the recall site to request a refund.”
