Texas Accidents on the Rise

On March 14, 2022, the TxDOT reported that 2021 marked the second-deadliest year for Texas roadways, with 4,480 people killed. That is a mere two hundred and twenty-one less than the deadliest year since 1940, reported in 1981. Several thousand of these deaths were caused by the simple but devastating mistakes of not wearing a seatbelt or driving over the posted speed limit. 2021 also saw a 15% increase in fatalities over 2020, with an 18.4% increase in the first half of the year alone. The TxDOT is tracking accidents to determine where roads need to be improved to make our roads safer. However, the primary responsibility for safe roads in Texas lies in the hands of Texas motorists. Commissioner Laura Ryan said, “Driving behavior is the cause, but also one of the most important solutions. This is not blame. These are the facts. We all have a role.” If you or someone you love has been affected by the careless actions of a Texas motorist, you may be entitled to legal compensation. Our Law Office has been representing the people of San Antonio and the surrounding area for thirty years, and we have the expertise and experience necessary to represent you.

(May 11, 2022) An elderly woman was killed by a suspected drunk driver while on a neighborhood walk with her son late yesterday morning on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, as reported by KSAT News. The woman, Irma Lozano, age 78, had stopped for a few moments to chat with a neighbor on the sidewalk near Oak Hill Road while her son moved on a little way. It was then that a driver of a gray Ford Edge jumped the curb and drove straight into the woman right in front of her neighbor’s eyes. The driver continued at high speed until crashing into a nearby tree, “she hit it so hard it came out with a root,” Lily Delgado, the neighbor who was speaking to Irma Lozano, told KSAT. Irma Lozano died at the scene. The woman who was driving the car was transported to the hospital by ambulance, where the police charged her with intoxicated manslaughter. Her condition is unknown, and her name has not been released.

Intoxicated drivers claim many lives every year. Many drivers understand they are always accepting some risk when they get behind the wheel of an automobile, but to be killed by another’s careless and selfish actions when you were simply trying to enjoy a neighborhood stroll with your family is inexcusable. The Law Office of Carabin Shaw has been representing the victims of DUI accidents in San Antonio for 30 years, and if you have suffered the loss of a loved one due to another’s negligent actions, we stand ready to assist you in receiving your full legal compensation.

Man stepping over puddle in rain

(May 1, 2022) A man is in critical condition at the hospital after being struck by an intoxicated driver while crossing the street last night, April 31, 2022, as reported by KSAT. Apparently, the man was crossing the street at the 8100 block of Marbach on San Antonio’s West Side, when he was struck by a silver vehicle. He was seriously injured, as reported by the police, and was transported to the hospital in critical condition. However, he was stable as of last night. The driver of the silver vehicle fled the scene and was charged with failure to render aid after he was found near the accident by the police. They also reported that the man appeared to be intoxicated and was also charged with driving while intoxicated.

Early this morning, May 1, 2022, a woman was struck and killed by a vehicle while attempting to cross Interstate 10 on the 9700 block on the West Side. Police reported that a distressed and unclothed woman approached their vehicle while they were parked in a parking lot near an I-10 access road at 1:35 A.M. The officers called for Emergency Medical Services and requested a female officer, but the woman became confrontational when they attempted to render aid. She then fled across the highway when she was fatally struck by an oncoming vehicle, which was unable to avoid her. The driver did not stop to render aid, but no charges are pending at this time.

(March 18, 2022) Early Friday morning on the far west side of San Antonio, a woman was killed, and a man was injured following a single-vehicle rollover accident. The accident occurred on Loop 1604, Southbound near the Medina Creek area. The vehicle swerved off the road, crashed into a barrier, then fell 60 feet down an embankment. Officers reported that the car erupted into flames after flipping multiple times. They are unsure whether alcohol or extreme speed were involved. The driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

That same Friday morning, March 18, a woman was severely injured in another single-vehicle rollover accident on I-35 near San Pedro Avenue. For unknown reasons, the woman driving the white sedan lost control of her vehicle and plummeted onto a lower level of I-35. Emergency responders extracted her from her car and transported her to University Hospital.

(March 17, 2022) Late Thursday night, a man and woman were injured and their 5-month-old baby following a two-vehicle rollover accident. The crash took place at around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Culebra and Ingram Road on the Far West Side of San Antonio. The family was struck by a sedan attempting to turn onto Ingram. The force of the collision caused their vehicle to flip onto the sidewalk, injuring all three passengers. They were rescued from the vehicle and transported to University Hospital in stable condition.

On January 30, a driver was arrested for Driving While Impaired (DWI) after fatally striking a pedestrian on the Northwest Side of San Antonio, according to KSAT News. The incident took place in the early morning at 2:18 AM on the 3600 block of Northwest Loop 410, in an area where pedestrians are prohibited from crossing. As reported by KSAT News, the driver of the gray Dodge Charger remained at the scene until the authorities arrived but were arrested when they showed signs of intoxication. They also reported that the pedestrian who was killed at the scene has not yet been identified.

Drunk driving is entirely preventable and irresponsible, yet it affects thousands of Texans every year. Txdot.gov reported that 963 people were killed, and 2,114 suffered serious injuries due to DWI or DUI in 2020 alone. According to the center for disease control and prevention (CDC), DUIs account for 28% of all traffic fatalities in the United States and 17% (214) of all traffic-related deaths of those ages 0 to 14 years. This should not be. There are many ways to avoid driving while intoxicated or driving under influence in 2022, including public transportation, hiring a taxi or a rideshare service, or simply having a designated driver. At the Carabin Shaw Law Firm, we encourage everyone to drive responsibly and keep their community safe.

Earlier this month, an accident in Fabens, TX, near the border with Mexico, claimed one man’s life and seriously injured several others. According to a recent news report, the collision occurred during a mud racing event when one of the vehicles on the track lost control and crashed into a crowd of bystanders.

Evidently, one witness caught some of the events leading up to the accident on tape. The video shows a vehicle starting to fishtail before it knocks over several cones. People are heard screaming in the background. The video then cuts out. Another video from the immediate aftermath of the accident shows a white truck stopped under a tent designated for spectators. The video shows one person lying on the ground. Several other vehicles can be seen in the immediate vicinity.

One man was killed in the accident, and seven others were seriously hurt. Authorities are still investigating the accident, as it was initially unclear what caused the vehicles to leave the track and why there was not a more substantial barrier between the track and spectators. It remains unclear if this was an officially sanctioned event or just a group of people who arranged a recreational race.
