Bicyclist Suffers Critical Injuries After Being Caught Between Two Vehicles in T-Bone Accident

According to a KSAT News report, a bicyclist suffered critical injuries after being caught between vehicles in an accident.

Police reported the accident happened at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th, at the intersection of Poteet Jourdanton Freeway and I-35 on San Antonio’s South Side. A vehicle ran a red light through the intersection, T-boning another vehicle. The impact sent the T-boned vehicle into another vehicle, and a male bicyclist was caught in between. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. The report did not mention if anyone in the vehicles was injured. The investigation is ongoing.

Winter Weather Cycling: Common Hazards and Tips for Safe Riding

Temperatures in San Antonio are finally nearing freezing and are expected to hold for the foreseeable future.

Winter weather can create serious hazards for pedal cyclists in San Antonio. Let’s take a look at what hazards you can expect to face in the coming winter months and tips to increase your safety while cycling.

Winter Weather Hazards for Cyclists

The most common hazards facing bicyclists in the wintertime include:

  • Slick Surfaces/Debris: Roadways and sidewalks may become covered in ice, creating an extreme slip hazard. Cyclists must use extreme caution when navigating ice, as a fall could lead to an auto accident. Sludge and debris are often thrown to the shoulder and bike lanes along busy streets, necessitating the use of the right lane.
  • Reduced Visibility: Winter months are darker earlier and often cloudy and rainy. This makes it more difficult for drivers to see you.
  • Increased Vehicle Traffic: Especially between Thanksgiving Day and New Year’s Day, traffic significantly increases. Roads that are safe during the rest of the year may become congested and dangerous.

While you can’t control the actions of the drivers around you, you can take steps to protect yourself from a winter bicycle accident.

Tips for Safe Winter Bike Riding

From the REI website, here are some things you can do to reduce your risk when cycling in the winter:

  • Increase Visibility: Wear bright, reflective winter gear and consider investing in a brighter headlight for your bike. If you already have reliable winter gear, you can put reflective tape on it or use reflective bands instead.
  • Keep e-Bike Batteries Warm: e-Bike batteries can drain much faster in colder weather.
  • Ride Relaxed: Relaxing your posture makes it easier to go over bumps and debris that are more common in the winter.
  • Avoid Major Debris: If the bike lane or shoulder is covered in sludge or other large debris, use the right lane instead. Move to the middle of the lane to increase visibility and discourage drivers from attempting to “squeeze past.”
  • Check and Adjust Your Tire Pressure: Air pressure loss happens faster in cold temps; inflate tires to the low end of the recommended range.

Of course, you can do everything right and still be injured in an accident. When that happens, call Shaw.
