Police reported the incident occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on the 14700 block of Potranco Road, near Highway 211 and Arcadia Path. Details about the accident are unknown, but firefighters reported having to cut free a man and a woman from two separate vehicles after the crash. BCSO, BCESD firefighters, and EMS all responded to the call, but it is unclear if any charges will be filed at this time.

Did You Know?

There were 14,720 fire truck accidents in the United States in 2020.

What Happens When You Are in an Accident with a Firetruck?

You probably don’t often think about getting in an accident with a fire truck. For one thing, they’re huge and pretty obvious, and for another, you would assume a firetruck operator would be careful when driving the truck.

Firefighters provide an invaluable service and are absolutely necessary — but that doesn’t make them infallible if they cause an accident that hurts you or your family.

Why Do Fire Truck Accidents Happen?

As with almost any other kind of accident, fire truck accidents happen when other drivers or the fire truck operator fails to react properly in the situation.

  • Failure to Yield — Other vehicles are required to yield when the sirens are blaring and the lights are flashing, but they don’t always do that.
  • Unsecured Equipment — Hoses, ladders, and other equipment can fall off of the truck, causing a serious accident.
  • Failure to Exercise Reasonable Care — Overly reckless actions on the part of the truck operator can also cause a major accident.

Compensation After a Fire Truck Accident

Like patrol vehicles, a fire truck is allowed to break many rules of the road to get to the emergency as quickly as possible, which is a good thing. However, when a massive vehicle is breaking traffic laws, it can cause a very serious accident.

Firefighters still have a responsibility to drive safely without taking unnecessary risks that endanger others. This is especially true when they are not actively responding to an emergency.

The government is not above the law if it causes your injury. If you were hit by a negligent fire truck operator or were injured as a firefighter in the truck at the time, you may have a personal injury case. Suing the government for your injury is difficult and complicated, but not impossible. There are strict rules and processes that must be followed, so having an experienced injury team on your side is a must.

Cases against the government have a damage cap of $250,000 per person and $500,000 per accident in Texas.
