Navigating Intersections on a Motorcycle

More than a third of all fatal motorcycle accidents happen at intersections, and they’re on the rise — fatal motorcycle accidents increased 21% between 2022 and 2023.

Navigating intersections while riding a motorcycle can be difficult. However, accidents at intersections are preventable, and there are actions that you can take to protect yourself as a motorcyclist.

Intersection Safety for Motorcycles

Drivers have a responsibility to check twice for motorcycles, but you shouldn’t rely on others to keep you safe. Instead, follow these tips when approaching an intersection:

  1. Wear Visible Gear — Most accidents happen because drivers don’t see the motorcyclist in time. Improve your visibility by wearing bright colors and reflective gear where possible.
  2. Search Ahead — Search far ahead of the road in front of you. Look for hazards such as motorists looking to make a right turn, road debris, or signs warning of upcoming hazards.
  3. Don’t Ride in Blind Spots — Stay out of blind spots whenever possible.
  4. Assume Nothing — Don’t assume a driver can see you, and don’t assume the right-of-way just because you have it. Instead, try to make eye contact with other drivers and let passenger vehicles pull into an intersection first as an added layer of protection.
  5. Follow the Rules of the Road — Don’t ride between vehicles, lane split, or ignore a traffic signal.

These tips don’t exclude the steps that all drivers should take, such as looking twice before proceeding through an intersection and waiting a couple of seconds after the light turns green to go.
