Texas Rollover Accidents

(March 18, 2022) Early Friday morning on the far west side of San Antonio, a woman was killed, and a man was injured following a single-vehicle rollover accident. The accident occurred on Loop 1604, Southbound near the Medina Creek area. The vehicle swerved off the road, crashed into a barrier, then fell 60 feet down an embankment. Officers reported that the car erupted into flames after flipping multiple times. They are unsure whether alcohol or extreme speed were involved. The driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

That same Friday morning, March 18, a woman was severely injured in another single-vehicle rollover accident on I-35 near San Pedro Avenue. For unknown reasons, the woman driving the white sedan lost control of her vehicle and plummeted onto a lower level of I-35. Emergency responders extracted her from her car and transported her to University Hospital.

(March 17, 2022) Late Thursday night, a man and woman were injured and their 5-month-old baby following a two-vehicle rollover accident. The crash took place at around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of Culebra and Ingram Road on the Far West Side of San Antonio. The family was struck by a sedan attempting to turn onto Ingram. The force of the collision caused their vehicle to flip onto the sidewalk, injuring all three passengers. They were rescued from the vehicle and transported to University Hospital in stable condition.

Rollover accidents can be very frightening experiences. A study conducted by the National Center for Statistics and Analysis Research and Development found the following about rollover vehicle accidents:

  1. Most fatal rollover crashes are single-vehicle crashes.
  2. Rollover crashes are more likely to result in fatalities than other types of crashes.
  3. Rollover crashes constitute about one-fifth of all fatal crashes.
  4. Nearly three-fourths of occupants killed in rollover crashes were not using restraints, and slightly less than two-thirds of them were completely ejected from the vehicle.
  5. Speed was an important factor in fatal rollovers, with most crashes occurring on roads where speed limits were 55 miles an hour or greater. (April 2002, DOT HS 809 438 Technical Report)
