Braga Fresh voluntarily recalled dangerous broccoli in December 2024.
Voluntarily Recalled Broccoli Upgraded to Class I Risk Level, Consumers Urged to Check Their Freezers
According to a news release, Braga Fresh recalled contaminated broccoli sold at Walmart, which has now been elevated to a Class 1 risk level.
No illnesses have been reported from this recall. The specific products involved are 12oz bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart stores identified by having a UPC code 6 81131 32884 5 on the back of the bag, with Best if Used by Date Dec 10, 2024, and Lot Code: BFFG327A6 on the front of the bag. All potentially affected products are past their expiration date and are no longer being sold in any stores.
While these products are past their date, consumers may have frozen them for later use. They are contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, which can be deadly to:
- The elderly,
- Small children,
- And those with weakened immune systems.
There is also a risk of miscarriage and stillborn infants if consumed by pregnant women.
This particular strain can survive in freezing temperatures. If you purchased the product, DO NOT CONSUME IT and discard it. For more information about the recall, you can contact 877-456-7445, Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm PST, or email WeCare@bragafresh.com.
What Is a Class I Risk Level?
The FDA uses a class system to identify the risk of each recalled product, ranging from Class III (lowest risk) to Class I (highest risk).
- Class III — The product likely won’t cause any health complications. But there is a slight chance that it will, so the product is being recalled.
- Class II — There is still a low possibility of injury or death, but the health complications might have serious or permanent consequences, so the product is being recalled.
- Class I — There is a higher potential for serious injury or death from the use of the product, so it is being recalled.
How Can I Tell If I Was Poisoned With Listeria Monocytogenes?
Listeria infections are rare. An estimated 1,600 people in the U.S. get sick from Listeria each year. A Listeria infection can be invasive (listeriosis) or non-invasive (intestinal).
Symptoms of an intestinal infection begin within 24 hours after eating the contaminated food and include:
- Diarrhea,
- Abdominal Pain,
- And Vomiting.
Symptoms are usually mild and clear up in 1 to 3 days.
Conversely, symptoms of invasive listeriosis begin within 2 weeks after eating the contaminated food. They typically include:
- Fever,
- Headaches,
- Confusion,
- Loss of Balance,
- Seizures,
- Muscle Aches/Fatigue,
- And Stiff Neck.
Symptoms can be severe. In cases of invasive listeriosis not associated with pregnancy, almost 1 in 6 people die.
Pregnant women typically suffer only muscle aches/fatigue and fevers. Some may not notice as symptoms are typically mild but still commonly result in miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn.
If you ate contaminated food that has been recalled, and if you have any of these symptoms, see a doctor ASAP. If you ate contaminated food but have no symptoms, the CDC website states that you likely do not need treatment. If you’re not sure, talk to your doctor.
