3 Safety Tips for Walking in the Rain in San Antonio

San Antonio has experienced more rain so far this year than the entirety of 2023.

With the weather cooling and more rainy days fast approaching, it’s important to know the hazards of walking in the rain. Motorists will have a hard time seeing you, the pathways will be easy to slip on, and the road will be slick, leaving you vulnerable to pedestrian accidents.

Walking in the rain isn’t safe, but most people don’t make plans to do so — fortunately, if rain comes upon you suddenly, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk.

#1 — Walk Further in from the Curb

Passing vehicles will have a hard time seeing you and will be splashing large amounts of water onto the sidewalk. This can easily cause you to slip and fall into the street or injure yourself on the sidewalk. Protect yourself by walking further away from the curb than you normally would.

#2 — Make Yourself as Visible as Possible

Visibility is key to pedestrian safety. If there’s a chance for rain in the forecast, choose bright-colored clothing and put an umbrella in your bag. Bright-colored clothes make you stand out to drivers, especially against the bleak gray of rainy conditions. Umbrellas do more than just keep you dry — they also help drivers see you and keep the rain out of your eyes, which can impact your ability to see an approaching vehicle.

#3 — Use Extra Caution When Crossing

Following all of the rules of the road is critical in rainy conditions. In addition to proper pedestrian etiquette, here are a few additional crossing tips for when it’s raining:

  1. Don’t rush the crosswalk — If there are only a few seconds left, wait until the next opportunity.
  2. Don’t cross between vehicles — Crossing between vehicles is never a good idea, but is especially dangerous in the rain.
  3. Don’t use your phone while crossing — Keep distractions to a minimum. You need to be fully alert in case a driver loses control or doesn’t see you.
  4. Make eye contact before crossing — Even if you have the signal, make eye contact with the driver before stepping in front of them.

Of course, you can do everything right and still be injured by a reckless driver. If that happens, call Shaw.
