First-Aid for a Dog Attack in San Antonio

Dog attacks are a frequent occurrence in San Antonio, so it’s important to know what to do if a loose or aggressive dog bites you or someone you know.

First Steps After a Dog Attack in San Antonio

The first concern in any animal attack is the safety of everyone involved. If a loose dog bites you or someone you know, get away as quickly as you can. If the dog cannot be secured away from the victim or if you cannot escape to safety, call 9-1-1.

Treating a Dog Bite

Render first aid to the dog bite victim following these steps:

  1. Stop the Bleeding — Stop any bleeding with a clean cloth or towel by applying direct, even pressure to the bite.
  2. Wear Gloves — If you have access to gloves, wear them to protect yourself and the victim. If you don’t, make sure to wash your hands for 30 seconds with warm water and soap.
  3. Clean the Wound — Even if the skin was not broken, thoroughly clean the wound with warm running water for 5 minutes. After that, apply gentle soap and water and rinse for 3 minutes.
  4. Cover the Bite — Applying antibiotic ointment is optional but not required. Cover the bite with a clean, dry dressing.

Seek Help From a Medical Professional

Not all dog bites need hospital treatment, but it’s better to err on the side of caution, especially when children are involved. A child is incredibly prone to infection and may be made very sick from a small bite.

Immediately call 9-1-1 if the victim:

  • Was bitten on the face, neck, hands, or groin area,
  • Has exposed or visible bone,
  • Was bitten multiple times,
  • Is bleeding profusely, or if the bleeding doesn’t stop after a few minutes,
  • Has a foreign object left in the wound,
  • Is in extreme pain,
  • Has redness or swelling around the bite,
  • Has puss oozing from the wound,
  • Or was bitten by a stray or wild animal.
