Cargo Shifts and Spill Accidents in San Antonio: What You Need to Know.

There’s no arguing that 18-wheelers perform an essential service by transporting goods across Texas. But, if you’ve ever had a reckless big rig operator barreling down on you while you’re trying to enjoy a family road trip, you know that they are also dangerous to other motorists.

Semi-truck accidents are made much worse when cargo shifts and spills onto the highway and other vehicles. Unfortunately, they are pretty common in the San Antonio area as 18-wheeler traffic steadily increases.

Let’s take a look at why they happen and what to do if you have been seriously injured in an 18-wheeler accident.

Why Cargo Spills Happen

While every accident is unique, there are several common reasons why cargo spills happen across San Antonio.

  • Rollover Accidents — When a big rig rolls over, heavy cargo often spills out due to the force of the impact.
  • Reckless Driving — Making deadlines during ever-growing demand puts pressure on drivers to take reckless actions like speeding, tailgating, distracted driving, and other aggressive behaviors.
  • Fatigued Driving — Over-tired drivers are more likely to lose control of their rig, which leaves the top-heavy vehicle prone to rollover accidents.
  • Debris — Debris in the road from construction or other reasons can cause operators to overcorrect and lose control.
  • Improper Loading — If cargo is not properly secured, it can shift and cause the rig to roll over, spilling the cargo.
  • Incorrect Load Weight — Overfilled rigs can cause various parts to malfunction, leading to serious accidents.

All of these risks are well-known and strictly regulated. When accidents like this happen, negligence is almost always involved. Because 18-wheelers are company vehicles, the number of parties who could be responsible is increased dramatically over a regular auto accident.
