Fire Hospitalizes Two Adults and One Child on the South Side

Burn injuries commonly occur at home for people of all age groups.

South Side Apartment Fire Hospitalized Child and Two Adults

According to a KSAT News report, an apartment fire probably caused by a grill resulted in three injuries and extensive property damage on August 17, 2023.

The fire occurred at around 3 a.m. and was likely caused by a barbeque grill in a southside apartment complex, according to fire officials. The fire destroyed 8 units of the apartment complex, 6 of which were occupied. When fire officials arrived at the scene, they found a man holding a child, both with burn injuries, exiting the apartment where the fire appeared to have started. They also rescued a woman who they found hanging from a second-story balcony. All three were transported to the hospital, and no other injuries were reported.

Did You Know?

Small children under 5 are twice as likely to be treated in the hospital for burn injuries, according to Shriner Children’s Hospital.

Child Burn Injury in San Antonio

Apartment fires are not the way your child could be badly burned. In fact, one of the most common ways small children are burned is scalding water, which wouldn’t be hot enough to burn an adult. While most of these injuries happen at home because of simple mistakes, what happens when your child is burned at Daycare in Texas?

Ways Your Child Can Be Burned at Daycare

Daycare facilities in Texas are supposed to be safe, fun places for your child when you’re away, but this is not always the case. Children can be burned at daycare by:

  • Scalding Water
  • Hot Food or Unattended Beverages
  • Electrical Accidents
  • Chemical Inhalation
  • Contact with Chemicals

Common sense and safety regulations should keep children at daycare away from potential sources of burn injury. If your child was burned at daycare, here’s what you can do about it.

What to Do If Your Child Was Burned at Daycare in San Antonio

It is critical to take immediate action if your child is burned or otherwise hurt at a daycare facility in San Antonio.

  1. Take Your Child to the Emergency Room ASAP – Immediately seek medical help for your child’s burn injury, especially if they are younger than five. Burns on small children can affect their airways, making it difficult for them to breathe properly.
  2. Report the Abuse – The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has an abuse hotline you can contact anonymously to report daycare abuse. Contacting 1-800-252-5400 will spur an investigation into the facility in 24 hours.
  3. Call the Police – If your child’s burn injury is serious, life-threatening, or if you believe the injury was intentional, call the police. Law enforcement will investigate employees accused of assault, and police involvement will ensure that the incident is properly documented.
  4. Document Everything – Keep track of all communications between you and the daycare facility regarding the incident. Take photos of any letters, screenshot texts, and email communication.
  5. Contact a Child Injury Attorney – An experienced child injury attorney can help you find out what damages you are legally entitled to as the parent and seek restitution for the pain you and your child suffered.
