How to Recognize and Report Drunk Drivers in San Antonio
San Antonio roads are not safe during the winter holiday season. It’s not a good idea to drive after sunset, which is incredibly early during winter. Why? Because drunk drivers are out in force during this time of year more than any other.
You can’t control the actions of other people, but you can help keep San Antonio roads safer. One way you can help is by reporting drunk drivers when you see them on the roads.
Important Note: Unless you are a police officer, attempting to stop, arrest, or punish a drunk driver is dangerous and not advised. Leave the law to law enforcement and keep yourself and others safe.
Recognizing Drunk Driving Behavior
You can never tell for sure if someone is driving drunk, but there are certain actions that many drunk drivers exhibit. Those include:
- Stopping or accelerating randomly,
- Tailgating,
- Delayed response to traffic signals,
- Driving without headlights at night,
- Driving abnormally slowly,
- Suddenly turning or making an illegal turn,
- Narrowly missing an object,
- Straddling the center line,
- Drifting in and out of lanes,
- Driving the wrong way.
Usually, a drunk driver will exhibit more than one of these traits at a time. If you think you’ve spotted a drunk driver, here’s what you can do.
Reporting a Drunk Driver
There are steps you can take to get drunk drivers off the road as soon as possible while keeping yourself and others safe.
- Stay Far Away — Don’t try to get the driver’s attention or cut them off. Stay back and give yourself plenty of space to react to erratic driving behaviors.
- Gather Information — Take note of the driver’s license number and car make and model. Remember, only attempt this if it’s safe to do so.
- Call 9-1-1 — If you have hands-free technology in your, call 9-1-1 right away. If you don’t, pull over to a safe location before you make the call. Provide them with the information you collected, as well as what road and crossroads they are driving on/near and the direction they’re traveling.
The police will take care of the rest. You’ve contributed to a safer San Antonio!
