Accidents With Construction Vehicles in San Antonio: What You Need to Know

Drivers in San Antonio are sharing the road with more construction vehicles than ever, thanks to extensive highway construction projects across the city.

This work is necessary — however, extensive work zones and increases in construction vehicles create a unique hazard for those driving around San Antonio. Construction vehicles are often much heavier than passenger vehicles, especially if loaded with debris and other materials. An accident with a construction vehicle often ends in catastrophic injury or death as a result.

Let’s take a look at what to do if you’re in an accident with a construction vehicle in San Antonio, and where to get help if you choose to file a personal injury claim.

What to Do After a Construction Vehicle Accident

If you’re in an accident with a construction vehicle, follow these steps to protect your potential claim:

  1. Check Passengers/Yourself for Injury — If anyone is hurt, immediately seek medical attention.
  2. Call 9-1-1 — If anyone is hurt or if there is significant property damage, you are required to call the police by Texas law. Even so, it’s a good idea to have a police report for any accident and it is often required for insurance claims.
  3. Exchange Information — Gather name, address, phone number, and insurance from any driver involved.
  4. Document the Scene — If you are able to, take photos and/or video of the scene, damage to the vehicles, and any visible injuries. Take note of any nearby cameras that may have caught the incident.
  5. Get Evaluated by a Medical Professional — Even if you don’t think you are seriously hurt, get checked out anyway. Some life-threatening conditions don’t show themselves until after the accident but require immediate treatment.
  6. Report the Accident to Insurance — As soon as you are able, report the accident to your insurance company. Make sure you don’t admit fault.
  7. Call a Commercial Vehicle Accident Attorney

Do I Need an Attorney for a Construction Vehicle Accident?

Construction vehicles are often classified as commercial vehicles, meaning that they are used to conduct business.

Commercial vehicles will have company insurance backing them up. They will likely contact you quickly after the accident to get you to admit fault or offer you a settlement amount.

This amount is almost never an accurate representation of your injuries. However, it can feel intimidating to fight an insurance company all alone. Carabin Shaw’s commercial vehicle accident attorneys can negotiate with the insurance company for you so that you can focus on recovery.
