Avoid These Dangerous Toys This Christmas (2024)

Make sure your child’s presents are safe this holiday season.

Toy Safety for the Holidays: Avoiding Injuries and Knowing When to Sue for Defective Toys

It’s the season of giving! You must be very excited to enter a store and choose the best gift you can give to your little loved ones this Christmas. But remember to always check for several factors before buying things, especially toys, to ensure children’s safety.

Not all toys you’re being marketed this Christmas are safe — some defective products slip through the cracks, and innocent children pay the price. However, you can reduce your child’s risk by being aware of current product recalls and reviewing safe purchasing tips.

For any assistance related to product injuries, Carabin Shaw is always ready to serve.

Did You Know?

Children age four and under are the most vulnerable to toy-related injuries, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Recalled Toys to Avoid in 2024

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has listed recalled products for 2024 that every parent should be aware of.

This includes the following:

  • Intellio Toys’ Bright Builder Fort Kits with Flashlights (FKL-BG, FKL-BR, L-5BG, and L-5BR models) — These fort kits violated federal regulations for battery-operated toys by using button cell batteries in an easily opened compartment in the included flashlight. Button cells, when swallowed, can cause serious injuries, such as internal chemical burns and death, making them hazardous.
  • Hallmark Keepsake Christmas Tree Ornament – Cad Bane – Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett — This ornament is at risk of mold due to the incomplete drying of the brown paint exterior before packaging. Mold can be harmful to consumers, as it may cause respiratory issues.
  • Dreamgro Lullaby Travel Soothers  — This infant soother contains a soft gold star attached to the mermaid’s hair and has the chance to be detached. Circumstances can cause choking to the little ones and are considered hazardous.
  • Wee Gallery Tummy Time Gallery — The pockets of this art card violated the phthalates ban because its card pockets have clear plastic coverings that contain phthalates. Ingested phthalates are toxic and harmful to kids.
  • Stanley Jr. Kids Wheelbarrow and 7-piece Garden Sets — The long wooden handle of the hoe and rake included in this set are painted yellow. The paint contains excessive levels of lead, which could harm young children’s health.
  • Glow in Dark Supplies Toy Sets — The set includes a bunny ear that has a button cell battery that violated the federal regulations for battery-operated toys. Button cell batteries are risky and can cause harm to children if swallowed.
  • Segway Ninebot P100 KickScooters — The kickscooter’s front fork has the tendency to break, which can cause the rider to fall or attain an injury. Serial numbers of affected units contain date codes of 2308 and greater.

Consumers of these are guaranteed a refund, replacement, or repair from the manufacturer, according to CPSC.

Tips on Selecting Toys Safely

You can reduce your risk of purchasing an unsafe toy by following these safe purchasing tips:

  • Follow the toy’s age recommendation
  • Avoid giving young kids toys with small parts
  • Do not give children toys with sharp points or edges
  • Avoid long cords or strings
  • No to toys with magnets or button batteries
  • Avoid older painted toys
  • Always buy safety gear for riding toys

Of course, you can do everything right and still be injured by a defective product.

When to Sue for a Defective Toy Injury

If your child was injured or made very sick by a defective or dangerous toy, you may have grounds to file a product liability claim.

Businesses are required to maintain high standards of safety. If you or your child is hurt because a product has a design flaw that made it dangerous or was damaged in the manufacturing process, the business can be held strictly liable for the injury/illness it caused.
