56-Year-Old Man Run Over by Vehicle in Neighborhood Driveway

There are many kinds of injury accidents that happen close to home across Texas.

Neighbor Strikes and Kills Man Exiting Home in North Side Neighborhood

According to a KSAT News report, a man was killed by a woman in a vehicle while exiting his North Side home.

Police reported the incident occurred at around 1:45 a.m. on September 30th at a home on Big Meadows and Putman Farm streets, just east of Interstate 10. Car Accidents in Texas Neighborhoods: What You Need to Know

Many car accidents happen in your own neighborhood.

When you’re driving in an unfamiliar area, you’re naturally more alert and focused. But, when you’re driving the same familiar streets you always do, especially in your neighborhood, you naturally become more relaxed and less focused. This is unfortunate because neighborhoods are home to many hazards for drivers, and it’s imperative you stay alert to avoid a tragic accident.

Why Do Car Accidents in Neighborhoods Happen?

Drivers routinely make similar mistakes when driving through a neighborhood, especially their own neighborhood. Common causes of car accidents in neighborhoods include:

  • Distracted Drivers — Checking your phone, putting your stuff together, thinking about dinner — distractions like these take your mind off driving, your eyes off the road, and your hands from the wheel. This greatly increases the risk of pedestrian accidents, as pedestrians are also usually distracted.
  • Reckless Driving — Speeding and ignoring traffic signs is commonplace behavior in many neighborhoods and is incredibly dangerous. Many drivers relax and decide that since they know the streets well enough, they can do whatever they want, putting other vehicles and pedestrians at risk.
  • Poor Visibility — Neighborhoods often involve many cars parked along the street, mailboxes, and other obstructions that can make seeing a dog, pedestrian, or oncoming vehicle difficult.
  • Drunk Drivers — Drunk drivers are dangerous regardless of where they’re driving. However, they present a particular danger to pedestrians walking at night and are more likely to crash into homes and vehicles parked along the street when driving through neighborhoods.

Drivers can and should keep themselves and their neighbors safe from accidents by staying alert, obeying traffic signs, and never driving drunk (even for short distances!).

What to Do After a Neighborhood Car Accident

The procedure following a neighborhood car accident is the same as any other car accident, and includes:

  1. Checking for Injuries — ensure no one was hurt, and if they were, immediately call 9-1-1.
  2. Calling 9-1-1 — For injuries or if property damage occurred.
  3. Documenting the Scene — Taking photos and checking if any door cameras caught the accident.
  4. Exchanging Information
  5. Reporting the Accident to Insurance — ASAP to avoid appearing fraudulent.
  6. Calling a Car Accident Attorney
