T-Bone Crash Leaves 4 Hospitalized, Two Critically Injured on General Krueger Blvd
According to a KSAT News report, a t-bone collision resulted in 4 hospitalizations last weekend on the North Side.
Police reported the accident happened at around 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 5th, in the 300 block of General Krueger Blvd on San Antonio’s North Side. A truck had stopped at a stop sign and was proceeding through when a white car that was speeding crashed into the side of the truck. The impact caused the white vehicle to spin out, and it had 5 occupants inside. 4 of the 5 occupants of the white vehicle were injured, with 2 sustaining life-threatening injuries. No one in the truck reported any injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
Did You Know?
32% of fatal two-vehicle car accidents in 2019 were angle collisions, meaning the vehicle was initially struck on the right or left side.
Passenger Injury in a T-Bone Crash: What You Need to Know
A t-bone accident is a specific kind of angle collision (the initial impact point is not in the front or the back of the vehicle) that can have catastrophic consequences for passengers.
If you’re injured as a passenger in a car accident, even if your driver is at fault, you could be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
Why Are T-Bone Accidents Dangerous for Passengers?
T-bone accidents happen when a vehicle is hit by another vehicle on the left or right side, usually at a 90° angle, hence the “T.” When this happens, passengers inside the impacted vehicle are at risk for more serious injuries than in a head-on or sideswipe accident.
Vehicles do not have nearly as much crash protection on the sides as they do on the front or back. Because of this, passengers are more likely to suffer severe injuries, including:
- Crushing injuries,
- Broken bones,
- Cuts from broken glass,
- Head injuries,
- Burns,
- And neck injuries.
T-bone accidents usually happen at intersections and are almost always caused by reckless driving from one or both parties, including behaviors like:
- Running a red light,
- Ignoring a stop sign,
- Speeding,
- Failure to yield ROW,
- And road rage.
According to the NCS, angle collisions (which include t-bone collisions) were responsible for 8,800 deaths in 2022, accounting for 32.5% of all vehicle collisions.
Injured As a Passenger, But My Driver Caused the Accident. Can I Still Sue?
In Texas, if you didn’t contribute to the accident, you can file a claim for your injuries, even if your driver caused the accident.
A passenger can be held wholly or partially responsible for an accident. In extreme cases, reckless actions like grabbing the wheel or obstructing the driver’s view would place fault on the passenger. Additionally, insurance companies may argue that you bear responsibility for being a passenger of a driver who is known to engage in dangerous or reckless behavior (i.e., distracted driving, drunk driving, etc.).
However, the blame will lie with your or another driver in most cases.
Additionally, you can sue a family member for car accident injuries in Texas. Some people feel uncomfortable filing a claim against a family member; however, it is important to note that your family member’s insurance is the one who pays for the accident–it doesn’t come out of their pocket. Also, their rates will likely go up regardless, especially if they caused the accident. Insurance companies are typically the only ones who benefit when you refuse to file a claim.
