Did You Know?

Small children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are most vulnerable to E. coli infection.

What Do I Do If I Have Recalled Carrots?

From the CDC website, if you currently have the affected products in your fridge or freezer, you should:

  • Dispose of them or return them — Do not eat them. Throw them away or return them to the store for a refund.
  • Clean Affected Surfaces — Wash any items or surfaces that came in contact with the carrots with warm, soapy water (or in the dishwasher, if applicable).

15 of the 39 reported cases of E. coli infection from these products have required hospitalization, and one person died.

What Are the Symptoms of E. coli Infection?

Symptoms of E. coli infection usually show themselves around 3 to 4 days after consuming contaminated products. However, some people do not display symptoms until as late as 10 days after exposure.

Symptoms of mild infection often include stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Most people recover without treatment after 5 to 7 days. You should drink plenty of fluids to avoid becoming dehydrated while experiencing symptoms. You should not take an anti-diarrheal, as it will prolong your exposure to the toxin and increase your risk of developing hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).

When to Call a Doctor

According to the CDC, you should immediately call your doctor if you are experiencing severe symptoms, which may require hospitalization and can be life-threatening.

Severe symptoms commonly include:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F
    • Diarrhea for more than 3 days that is not improving
    • Bloody diarrhea
  • So much vomiting that you cannot keep liquids down
  • Signs of dehydration, such as:
    • Not peeing much
    • Dry mouth and throat
    • Feeling dizzy when standing up

Some people also develop serious kidney problems (hemolytic uremic syndrome, also called HUS), which require hospitalization.
