Top 3 Injuries on City/Private Buses and Why They Happen

Whether city or private, bus accidents can result in serious injuries.

Though the number of people using public transportation in San Antonio has declined since the pandemic, buses still transport an average of 2.5 million people across the city monthly. Between 2020 and 2024, the FMCSA reported 5,067 bus accidents across the State, 2,433 of which resulted in at least one injury and 82 resulting in at least one fatality.

Most Common Bus Accident Injuries

Bus accidents often result in more serious injuries than car accidents, due mostly to the size and weight difference between buses and passenger vehicles. The most common injuries from bus accidents include:

  1. Head Injuries — TBI, concussions, and other head injuries are some of the most common injuries resulting from bus accidents. These injuries can leave victims paralyzed or disabled for the rest of their lives and frequently result in death.
  2. Crushing Injuries — Crushing injuries are more common in bus accidents when the bus is full and passengers are tightly packed in. Crushing injuries involve things like broken bones, severe bruising, and internal organ damage.
  3. Spinal Cord Injuries — Herniated disks, fractures, and back injuries that can lead to paralysis in extreme cases.

Why Do Bus Accidents Happen?

Every accident is unique, but there are common factors that contribute to bus accidents across the State, including:

  1. Driver Error — Careless actions such as speeding, texting, or drunk driving cause millions of accidents, and bus drivers are not immune to these mistakes. Bus drivers are also prone to suffering from fatigue from long shifts or late hours, which can easily contribute to severe accidents.
  2. Mechanical Failure — Failure to perform routine maintenance can result in mechanical failure due to the buses’ constant use.
  3. External Conditions — The weather conditions, road surface conditions, and light conditions can contribute to the likelihood of an accident. Bus accidents also increase in frequency during peak traffic hours, such as from 3 PM to 5:59 PM.

If you were injured in a bus accident in San Antonio or anywhere across Texas, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries.
