Don’t Drive Drunk During Fiesta 2024
According to a KSAT News report, Uber is offering Fiesta goers a discount in hopes of curbing drunk driving.
According to the report, Uber is partnering with Silver Eagle Beverages (the distributor for Anheuser-Busch in San Antonio) to offer a $10 discount on rides between Thursday, April 18th, starting at 2 p.m. and Monday, April 29th at 2 a.m. You can use code VIVA2024, or follow this link to receive your credit.
In a news release about the discount, the company states: “If you are celebrating Fiesta with an ice-cold beer or two, make sure you also plan for a way for you and your loved ones to get home safely – whether that’s a non-drinking designated driver or taking advantage of ridesharing services, such as Uber.”
Did You Know?
San Antonio is one of the worst cities in the United States for drunk driving.
Consequences of Drunk Driving During Fiesta
Police plan to be on high alert during Fiesta this year to catch drunk drivers.
San Antonio notoriously has a lax attitude toward drunk driving, and we pay the consequences — an average of 53 people die every year in drunk driving crashes in San Antonio alone.
Drunk driving is a big deal and has life-changing consequences. There’s nothing wrong with drinking during Fiesta, and we hope you have a wonderful time celebrating. But plan a sober ride, or you may face the following consequences.
Legal Penalties for Drunk Driving
The law is harsh on drunk drivers. For a first-time offense, drivers face:
- Fines — Of up to $2,000
- Jail Time — Between 3 to 180 days.
- Community Service Hours — In addition to the possibility of attending a DWI education program.
- License Suspension — For up to one year.
- Additional Fees — A potential annual fee of $1,000 to $2,000 may be charged for license reinstatement for up to 3 years.
These penalties can increase depending on the circumstances of the arrest, such as a BAC at or over 0.15 or an open container in the vehicle. Additionally, if someone under the age of 15 is in the vehicle at the time or if someone was killed in an accident, the crime may elevate to a felony.
Civil Penalties for Drunk Driving
If you injure or kill someone while driving drunk, you will face a criminal trial and potentially a civil trial as well.
Even if you’re punished in a criminal trial, the family of the injured or deceased can bring a civil suit against you for damages. The losses associated will be in addition to the criminal penalties you will face. Punitive or punishment damages may be included in the civil suit as a means of discouraging the behavior from happening again.
Of course, you will also have to live with the fact that you injured or killed another person. Also, getting a job may be difficult after being charged with a DWI or intoxication assault/manslaughter.
