Motor Scooter/E-scooter Accidents in San Antonio

E-scooters are an increasingly popular way to get around downtown San Antonio and around campus. They’re pretty easy to use, have a lower environmental impact, and don’t need special licensing. Unfortunately, they can also be very dangerous.

Motor scooters like Mopeds and E-scooters are involved in three times as many accidents per year than other forms of transportation. Let’s take a look at why these accidents happen, some safety tips for riding E-scooters and Mopeds, and how to get help after an accident.

Why So Many Accidents?

A study conducted last year in Oslo, Norway, sheds some light on the subject. After comparing data from 2,341 bicycle accidents and 850 E-scooter accidents, they found that most E-scooter accidents involved:

  • Intoxicated Drivers — 39% of all E-scooter accidents studied involved intoxicated drivers.
  • Young Adults — The average age of an E-scooter rider was 31 years, and the age distribution was between 20 and 40 years, much younger than bicycle riders.
  • Nighttime Driving — 66.4% of E-scooter accidents happen between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m.
  • Male Drivers — Men were overrepresented in the study, most likely due to general risk-taking behavior prevalence.
  • Weekends — 46.6% of accidents occurred on weekends, while most bicycle accidents happen during weekdays.

According to this study, the most prevalent cause of E-scooter accidents appears to be young, drunk operators.

Tips for Safely Operating E-scooters in San Antonio

E-scooters are an incredibly useful form of transportation when used properly. Here’s some tips on how to keep yourself safe while riding an E-scooter:

  1. Wear a Helmet — E-scooter riders are far more likely to receive head and neck injuries in an accident. Wearing a helmet protects you from severe head injury and TBI.
  2. Don’t Drink and Ride — Drinking alcohol reduces your coordination and critical thinking abilities, which are crucial for the safe operation of an E-scooter.
  3. Wear High-Visibility Clothing — Most E-scooter accidents happen at night. Make sure drivers can see you by wearing bright clothing and staying out of a vehicle’s blind spot.

Even if you do everything right, you can still be seriously injured in an E-scooter accident.

Liability in E-scooter Accidents

If you were injured in an E-scooter accident, the following parties may be to blame:

  • Negligent Drivers — if you were hit by a car or motorcycle.
  • The Manufacturing Company — if your E-scooter is defective.
  • Other E-scooter riders — if you were hit by another scooter.

Don’t fight by yourself. If you were hurt in an E-scooter accident that wasn’t your fault, we can help.
