Construction work on the highway can cause serious accidents if not done properly.

Highway Construction Hits Sign, Closes U.S. 90

According to a KSAT News report, a construction accident led to the closure of U.S. 90 on the West Side yesterday, August 14, 2023.

The Texas Department of Transportation reported the closure was caused by an auto accident combined with a construction accident that occurred at around 9 a.m., causing some 2 hours of delays. Apparently, a contractor was paving in the area of U.S. 90 near JBSA-Lackland when they accidentally struck a highway sign with their crane. A separate auto accident also occurred at the same time, causing significant delays, though no injuries were reported.

Did You Know?

There were 788 serious injuries and 205 fatal accidents in construction zones in Texas in 2022, according to TxDOT data.

Construction Zone Accidents in San Antonio

Have you ever heard the saying, “The shortest distance between two points is under construction”? If you have, you might live in San Antonio. There are very few cities in Texas with as much traffic on extremely cramped roadways. Recent population and business booms in San Antonio and the surrounding area have led to an increase in road construction (yay us…). Let’s look at common reasons for construction zone accidents and what to do if you are ever in one.

Why Do Construction Zone Accidents Happen?

Roadways that are under construction are generally more dangerous than other roadways simply because of all the debris, cones, and heavy vehicles around. But let’s take a closer look at some specific causes of construction zone accidents that are common on San Antonio roads.

  • Improper Signage or Lack Thereof: Ever driven into a construction zone and had absolutely no idea? Improperly placed or lack of signage indicating that you’ve entered a construction zone endangers both you as a driver and the construction workers on the site.
  • Inconsistent Lanes and Changing Speeds: Drivers who aren’t paying attention to sudden lane changes and speed reductions cause accidents in San Antonio construction zones regularly. With highway lanes seemingly altered every day now, it’s important for drivers to be alert at all times.
  • Confusing Signals: Construction workers can give confusing signals that cause accidents with large construction vehicles. This can be due either to driver fatigue or improperly trained workers. With the huge demand for construction work right now, companies can rush training periods and put both their workers and innocent drivers in danger as a result.

These are just a few of the most common reasons why accidents happen in construction zones in San Antonio. Who is responsible if you are hit by another driver or construction vehicle in a construction zone?

Liability in Construction Zone Accidents

Did you know that the vehicle that hit you in a construction zone accident may not be the only party at fault? Construction companies may also be to blame if they:

  • Didn’t train their employees properly,
  • Failed to properly mark construction zones,
  • Pushed their drivers to work when they were fatigued,
  • Placed hazards in the roadway.
