Father and Two Children Hospitalized in Pedestrian Accident

A man and two of his children were sent to the hospital after a pedestrian accident last night, according to a San Antonio Express-News report.

According to the report, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, when a 33-year-old man crossed the 12500 block of Northwest Military Drive with his five children. An oncoming vehicle which later told police had the green light, was unable to stop in time, striking and injuring the man and his two-year-old daughter and five-year-old son. The driver stopped to help, and police made no arrests. The family was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover fully.

Did You Know?

A study by Children’s Safety Network found that an average of 67,124 child pedestrians are injured annually in the United States.

Child Pedestrian Injury in Texas

When a child is injured, it is a devastating event for all parties involved, especially the parents. Children are very vulnerable to injury and are often seriously injured in auto accidents, even when in proper safety seats. However, tens of thousands of pedestrian children are injured in parking lots, neighborhoods, and school zones due to careless drivers in Texas and across the United States.

Child Pedestrian Statistics

Drivers must be extra careful to watch out for children when driving through school zones, neighborhoods, and parking lots; most people know the importance of this fact. However, it is easy to get careless when driving routes that are very familiar, especially in your own neighborhood. As a result, the most common place for a child to be injured as a pedestrian is in densely populated urban neighborhoods. Other contributing factors include:

  • Gender – boys represent two-thirds (66%) of all child pedestrian accidents.
  • Age – those ages 19-15 represent the largest age group for child pedestrian accidents (43%), with those ages 0-4 representing the second largest at-risk age group (22%).
  • Time of Day – 36% of child pedestrian accidents for those under age 16 occur between 3 and 7 p.m.

Distracted children were four times more likely to display unsafe crossing behaviors than undistracted children. Always watch for unexpected movement from children when driving, especially if they’re on their phones.

Save Driving Tips for Child Pedestrian Safety

No one wants to be responsible for injuring a child with their vehicle, even if it was due to a child’s unsafe crossing behaviors. Here are some driving tips to keep child pedestrians safe from the NHTSA.

  1. Follow the Posted Speed Limit – One of the biggest contributing factors to any kind of accident is speeding. Always follow the posted speed limit.
  2. Use Extra Caution in Low Visibility – Whether at night or during inclement weather conditions that limit visibility, make sure to use extra caution to watch for pedestrians.
  3. Always Be Watching – Distractions such as fiddling with the radio and texting contribute significantly to pedestrian accidents. Put the phone down and keep your eyes on the road when driving anywhere children might be present.
