Man Charged After Killing 8 With SUV

A man has been charged with eight counts of manslaughter and ten counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly plowing a vehicle into a group of men waiting at a bus stop, according to San Antonio Express-News. The deadly crash killed seven of the men at the scene, and one later died of his injuries in the hospital. They were waiting on the curb due to there being no actual bus stop, making them more vulnerable to this alleged attack. The man who was driving the Range Rover attempted to flee the scene but was stopped by pedestrians.

Did You Know?

The CDC reports that 224,945 people die every year due to accidental injury in the United States.

Wrongful Death and Auto Accidents

The state of Texas has a relatively high accident rate compared to other states. Unfortunately, while a majority of auto accidents result in only minor injuries, slightly over 3,000 people die on Texas roads every year. Worse still, these kinds of deaths are entirely preventable accidents that take the lives of beloved family members, leaving them suffering the loss of an accident that never should have happened. Because of the emotional distress wrongful death suits carry with them, there are special kinds of damages the immediate family of the deceased can claim.

Surviving Parents

No parent should have to bury their child, especially for a stupid mistake someone else made. Parents of the deceased can reclaim the value of any financial contributions their child was supposed to make to them, as well as damages for mental distress and loss of companionship.

Surviving Spouse

There is no amount of money that can replace the love and support of a lost spouse. However, the surviving spouse is also entitled to damages for loss of companionship and emotional distress, as the parents are. In addition to intangible losses, the spouse is also entitled to receive damages equivalent to financial support lost.

Surviving Children

Surviving children are entitled to recover damages in the form of lost companionship and financial support, including any cost of upbringing and education they were likely to receive from the deceased parent. If the children are adults, any financial contributions the parent would have been likely to make could also potentially be recovered.

There are also special kinds of damages that may apply to a wrongful death suit, such as punitive damages, which are designed to punish the perpetrator who caused the accident leading to the death and lost inheritance. Every case is different, so it’s important to speak to an attorney to find out exactly what your case is worth.
